About

Hi, I’m Ryan. I started The Ledger Guide because I kept running into the same problem: every “best accounting software” page said basically the same thing, and none of them felt like the writer had actually opened the apps they were ranking.

So that’s what I do here. I sign up for the tools, poke around inside them, read the fine print on pricing, and figure out which ones genuinely fit different kinds of small businesses. Then I write it down as plainly as I can, so you don’t have to lose an afternoon comparing tabs.

What this site is for

Choosing accounting or invoicing software is weirdly hard. The tools all look similar on the surface, the pricing pages hide the important details, and what works for a freelance photographer is rarely what works for a cleaning company or a nonprofit.

The Ledger Guide breaks it down by type of business. For each one, I try to answer a single honest question: which tool actually fits, and why? And when a free tool does the job, I’ll tell you that too.

How I test

Wherever a tool offers a free plan or trial, I create an account and run a real workflow through it: sending an invoice, logging expenses, pulling a report. The screenshots you see are my own. For pricing and features, I check each company’s official information rather than trusting an out of date roundup, and I read through real user reviews to catch the things a quick demo won’t show.

One thing I’m upfront about: I’m not an accountant, and I don’t pretend to be. I’m someone who does the research properly and explains it clearly. For anything to do with your specific taxes or legal situation, please talk to a qualified professional.

How the site makes money

The Ledger Guide is free to read. It’s supported by advertising and by affiliate partnerships, which means if you sign up for a tool through some of my links, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That never changes what I recommend. I’ll happily point you toward a free tool that pays me nothing if it’s the right fit. You can read more on my Methodology and Affiliate Disclosure pages.
